1947 — 26 April 2026
It is with profound sorrow that the family of Professor Raphael Munavu announces his peaceful passing on the morning of Sunday, 26 April 2026, at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi.
A towering intellect and a servant of this nation across six remarkable decades, Professor Munavu leaves behind a legacy that has permanently shaped Kenya’s educational, scientific, and institutional landscape.
A Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Nairobi, he earned his doctorate in Organic, Environmental and Industrial Chemistry from the University of Detroit and received honorary doctorates from Kalamazoo College and Laikipia University.
He served as Vice-Chancellor of Moi University, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Egerton University; Chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council for a decade; Chairman of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences for nineteen years; Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences; Chancellor of Laikipia University; founding Chairman of the Council of South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU); Commissioner at the Commission on Revenue Allocation and Chairperson of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform.
His final public service was as the Chairperson of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority, where he championed Kenya’s vision as Africa’s Silicon Savannah.
A proud son of Machakos, a devoted father and grandfather, and a man of deep warmth and generosity, Professor Munavu enriched the lives of all who knew him.
He was honoured by the nation with the Order of the Grand Warrior and the Elder of the Burning Spear — distinctions that only begin to capture a life given wholly in service.
Preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Salome Ndinda Munavu, and his cherished son Michael Mutemi Munavu, PhD.
He is survived by his sons Mutua Munavu and Sundiata Munavu; his siblings Emmanuel Mutuku Munavu, Boniface Munavu, Pauline Koki Musila and Agatha Ngii Mutiso; and his beloved grandchildren in Kenya and in the United States, who were the joy of his heart.
“His enduring commitment to learning and public service leaves a profound legacy that will continue to inspire generations.” — President William Ruto
