Mwalimu Benjamin Anthony Owaka

It is with profound sorrow and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the death of Mwalimu Benjamin Anthony Owaka, which occurred on Tuesday, 14th July 2026, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), Kisumu.

He was the beloved husband of Dorine Omolo Owaka and loving father of: Charles Owaka (National Police Service); Mary Owaka (Radiro Primary School, Homa Bay); Bertha Owaka (Rachuonyo County Hospital, Oyugis); Simon Peter Owaka (Nairobi); Caren Owaka (Connecticut, USA); Millicent Owaka (God Puro Primary, Homa Bay); Susan Owaka and Margaret Owaka (both of Ministry of Defence, Nairobi); Nelly Owaka (Pala Masogo Primary, Rongo); and Ruth Osomo (Wuon Akinyi) of Maseno.

Father-in-law of Arthur Nyawara (Karanda Secondary School, Ahero); Naftali Onyango (OLM Ringa Boys); Dr. John Osambo (Connecticut, USA); Julius Awuor (Sony Sugar); Denis Onam (Siger Secondary School, Rarieda); Maurice Otieno (KDF); Magdalene Odhiambo (Kisumu); and Celestine Awuor (Oletepesi Primary School, Kajiado).

He was blessed with 36 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Son of the late Jadoung’ Isaiah Osomo Akinyi and the late Mikayi Obunge ‘Kima’.

Brother of the late Ambrose Olang’o and the late Japuoni George Orao.

Stepson of the late Rosa Ayako and Jael Apiyo.

Stepbrother of Bernard Ochieng, Nerea Ayara, Jane Opuge, Joash Obunge, Samuel Oyola, Alice Atieno, Adori Oswanyo, Samson Siwa, Laban Adero and Maurice Ayieke.

Son-in-law of the late Jadoung’ Nashon Hagoi and the late Mama Agneta Hagoi.

Brother-in-law of the late Gilbert Ochieng’ Hagoi, Hezekiah Muruka, Peres Ochieng’, Ayub Hagoi, Tabitha Apiyo, Jacob Odongo and Jeje Hagoi.

Sisters-in-law include the late Mama Phoebe Olang’o, the late Mama Judith Orao, Mama Jane Orao and Mama Seline Orao.

He was ‘Sangi’ of Mwalimu Aggrey Ochieng’ Ohiito.

He was ‘Nyawana’ of the late Emmanuel Ogogo and the late Dorine Atieno of Kochia; the late Harun Nyawara and the late Bethsheba Ngore of Kisumu Korando; the late Trass Onyango and Mama Maritha Onyango of Songhor; the late John William Otieno and Mama Rose Otieno of Kochia; the late Washington Ong’any and the late Margaret Owounda of Kano Kamagaga; Lawrence Olang’ and Mama Elizabeth Ogutu of Kagan; the late Peter Ngore and Nelly Ngore of Seme Reru; and the late Joseph Onyango and Mama Grace Apiyo of Kochia.

The cortege will leave Kwee Funeral Parlour at JOOTRH, Kisumu, on Thursday, 30th July 2026, for a Requiem Mass at the St. John’s ACK Church, Ong’iyo, followed by an overnight vigil at his home.

The funeral and burial will take place on Friday, 31st July 2026, at his home in Ong’iyo Village, N.E. Karateng’ Location, Kisumu West Sub-County, Kisumu County, under the leadership of the ACK St. John’s Ong’iyo Parish, Diocese of Maseno South.

Rest in eternal peace, Mwalimu Benjamin Anthony Owaka.
