John Mmasava Kataka Death & Funeral | Obituary Announcement Alternate:

1935 – 2026

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mwalimu John Mmasava Kataka on 1 st May 2026 while undergoing treatment at Moi War and Memorial Hospital, Eldoret.

Born in 1935 in Kakamega County, Mwalimu John was the son of the late Erastus Kataka and late Rebecca Makonjio.

Mwalimu John was the husband of Priscilla Kharakha Mmasava and they were blessed with 11 children: Joseph Murumba, Hellen Mukasia, Peter Mukonyi, Dr. Margaret Nyilile, Edith Inyanji, Susy Makonjio, Beatrice Bwonya, Ruth Nanzala, Jane Naliaka, Edward Kataka and Emily Nasumbu.

Mwalimu John was blessed with 43 grandchildren namely the late Bernard, Michael, Esther, Audrey, Annabel, Faith, Annette, Tony, Valentine, Marion, Silvia, Pamela, Kennedy, Joshua, Alex, Charles, late Hillary, Eileen, Meltreen, Schein, Nockler, Adelaide, Kayesi, Brenda, Sandra, Tracy, Carolyne, Brian, Austine, Darlene, Yvonne, Vivian, Xavier, Vaudine, Fortune, Ronaldo, Daisy, Gael, Elsie, Eilan, Myles, John-Dawn and Dashan.

He was blessed with 31 great-grandchildren.

He was a brother of the late David Mulanda, late Tatuli Lunani, Leah Khaoya, Jedida Khasandi, late Ann Mukhwana, Moses Makunda, Peter Sakwa, late Charles Malovi, Rose Watora and Sarah Masistsa.

Brother-in-law of Prof. Wanjala Iyaya, late Samita Iyaya, Japheth Iyaya, Kefa Mugambi, Robai Nanjala, Joyce Nabalayo, Dr. Margaret Wambani, Peris Makunda, Margaret Malovi and others.

Uncle of the late Eliud Mukonyi, late James Makunda, Joseph Malovi, Samson Sakwa, Alex Kataka and many others. 

Cousin of Mumia, late Chimatuni, late Mutswenje, late Rupia, Lebanon, Niva, Aggrey, Ruth Muchuma.

Father-in-law of the late Jane Nduku, Gladys Murumba, late Abraham Musungu, Mary Kataka, late Ayub Fedha, Nebert Lumire, Polycarp Chisutia,Walter Namutali,Wyclif Molenje and Dan Opiyo.

The late was a Teachers Training College tutor until his retirement in 1990 after which he ventured into farming.

He was a devoted member of the Friends Church (Quakers) and served with commitment and devotion in various capacities at Lwanda K Monthly Meeting, Malava Yearly Meeting.

Daily meetings are being held at his home in Lwanda K Village, Kakamega North Sub-county, Kakamega County.

The main fundraiser to offset medical bills and other funeral expenses will be held on 13 th May 2026 at his home at 10:00 am.

The cortege will leave Delights Funeral Home, Bungoma on 14 th May 2026.

A night vigil will follow at his home on 15th May 2026 and his funeral service will be on 16th May 2026 from 9:00 am after which he will be laid to rest.

Nikasikia sauti kutoka mbinguni ikisema, Andika, Heri wafu wafao katika Bwana tangu sasa.
